Mission Masonic Center

125 years on Mission Street

between 22nd & 23rd

September 1863: As civil war ravaged the country, division spread like a virus. San Francisco was no exception, with many Californian’s traveling east to join the Union Army. Sibling turned against sibling and chaos prevailed, but not among the original thirteen Masons who met on the corner of Sixteenth and Valencia Street, just a block away from the birthplace of San Francisco – Mission Dolores in 1776

This first meeting led them to petition for Dispensation from the Grand Lodge of California. Thirteen months of operation passed before they received the charter on October 13th, 1864, officially establishing the lodge with twenty-five members. This the 13th lodge in San Francisco was assigned the number 169 ( 13²) further establishing the Mission Masons' affinity with the number 13.

After buying land at Guerrero & 14th Streets it was resolved to move closer to the commercial center of the Mission and a stately solid building was erected and dedicated at 2668 Mission Street on April 23, 1897. The Mission lodge thrived and as the 1939 Treasure Island World's Fair ended the decision was made to double the facility size and use the celebrated unique Deco architecture from the Fair that featured the symbol Pacifica on a new front facade and to decorate a second lodge or today’s Friendship Hall.

As the Mission Masonic Lodge No. 169 celebrates its 125th year at 2668 Mission St, the public should know the main entrance is now around the corner at 169 Bartlett St with both parking and elevator access to the building.
